Medical and Engineering University(MEU) Medical College was established on 5th August, 1914, In the initial stages, the institute was well nursed by Dr. Stephen Raul, the then Vice-Chancellor. It was then taken care of successive Vice-Chancellors who took interest in the growth of the Institute of Medicine and Health Sciences. Dr. Susan Rice who is the present Vice-Chancellor is a internationally recognized Surgeon and she evinces great interest in the growth and development of all the Faculties of the University especially the Medical Faculty of which she served as Dean, before he assuming charge as Vice-Chancellor. The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons had recently conferred on her their Fellowship (i.e) FRCS, in recognition of his contribution to General Surgery.
Dr. Steve Murphy, an eminent Cardiologist is a Medical Superintendent with distinction and dedication is presently the Principal and Head of the Department of Medical Education. He is also the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine.
The Principal and Head of the Department of Medical Education is ably assisted by renowned teachers and the Faculty consists of many eminent medical experts.
Dr. S. Peterovsky, a well known Obstetrician & Gynaecologist is the Medical Superintendent of the Medical College Hospital, which is functioning in the spacious new complex in Bratislava. Recently in recognition of his services to Obstetrics & Gynaecology.
The Medical institute and Hospital are developing rapidly under the benevolent guidance and able leadership of our President and the Vice-Chancellor. With the acquisition of a C.T. Scans and colour Doppler in April 1998 and the MRI's (1.5 Tesla) in 2006, the Medical Institute Hospital has joined a select band of sophisticated hospitals in the Europe.
The Academic tempo in the Medical Institute and Hospital is maintained at a high level by the activities of the scientific body – ‘Academy of Medical Sciences’. Under the auspices of the Academy, regular monthly meetings are held wherein research papers and hospital cases are presented and discussed. Symposia are held annually on various Medical topics. Eminent scientists are invited by the Academy to give guest lectures on topics of current importance. The University has been hosting several National Medical Conferences. The teachers in the Faculty are encouraged to present and many have presented papers/participated in several National Seminars/Conferences/ Symposia.
The imposing structures of the Medical Institute of Health Sciences with a built-in area of 6,970 square metre were built at a cost of several crores of rupees and has the distinction of having been declared open by His Excellency the President of the Republic, I. Gasparovic. This houses both the Medical and the Dental Colleges. In the first phase a 450 bed hospital with facilities for advanced surgical operations and sophisticated equipments and laboratory appliances for providing effective in-patient services,
Now the New Hospital Complex with a total strength of 1,250 beds with 6,776.5 square metre space with all basic amenities and specialised good quality services have been commissioned to offer services to various sections of beneficiaries from Bratislava and adjacent Districts.
A special feature of the Medical College is that it is one of the very few Medical Colleges in Slovakia directly run by Universities. As a University Medical College, there are ample opportunities for healthy interaction and learning from multi-disciplinary facilities available in the University.
